A new National Hockey League season is upon us and with that are referees once again have been asked by the league to make opening mic'd up statements. Fans universally disliked this process last season, so naturally they were asked to do it again.
Last night as the Pittsburgh Penguins were set to take on the Chicago Blackhawks and the Vegas Golden Knights took on the Seattle Kraken, the referees who were dropping the puck said some cringe-worthy things; take a look.
First up: Kelly Sutherland.
All things considered, this one wasn't too bad, but you have a guy in Sidney Crosby that's been around a long time and Connor Bedard who's making his NHL debut, the last thing they want to do is exchange an awkward greeting with the ref. You can see that by the way they respond.
The next one however, is very, very awkward and comes from referee Chris Lee:
Everything about this opening statement is awkward, especially the way the word electric came out, it's like the ref knew what he was saying was off-putting before he finished saying it.
All in all, I think referees should just stay away from trying to make season opening statements all together.
