This summer at the 2022 NHL Emtry Draft, the Montreal Canadiens took a big swing to upgrade their centre position. They sent the No. 13 and No. 66 picks to the Chicago Blackhawks for Kirby Dach. Dach was the 3rd overall pick in the 2019 draft. He went to Montreal as a restricted free agent and it looks like the two sides may finally be coming to a close on a new contract.
According to Sportsnet's Eric Engles and Elliotte Friedman, the Canadiens and Dach are discussing a 4-year contract with an AAV of $3.5 million. Dach is coming off his most productive season with 26 points in 70 games. Not stellar numbers, but as a 20-year-old on a Chicago Blackhawks team that was at the bottom of the league all year it's hard to look good.
This could be a very good deal if Kirby Dach could turn into the number two centre the Canadiens hope he can become. If not, it's a manageable cap hit they can trade away. Teams will always look at lottery draft picks and think they can turn them into stars.
