NHL Department of Player Safety punished Jeff Petry for 'sucker punching rookie' (Video)
Last night Jeff Petry made his debut for the Pittsburgh Penguins. Petry was acquired by the Penguins this summer in a trade that sent Mike Matheson to the Montreal Canadiens. Unfortunately for the Penguins they lost last night's game 6-2.
6 minutes into the second period a lapse in judgement by Jeff Petry led to him taking a 2 minute penalty for roughing. On the play Petry punches an unsuspecting Jonatan Berggren in the back of the head.
The NHL Department of Safety reviewed the play and opted to give Petry a fine for his actions.
Pittsburgh's Jeff Petry has been fined $5,000, the maximum allowable under the CBA, for Roughing Detroit's Jonatan Berggren.
After the game Petry issued the following statement.
I was just trying to punch/push the top of shoulder to kind of knock him off balance. It grazed off the top of his shoulder and went up. I wasn't trying to punch him in the back of the head or anything like that.
While Petry didn't believe his actions were intentional it's clear Player Safety felt a little differently.
