NHL Draft Pick, Former OHL Phenom, Retires at 25
A Canadian hockey player who tore up the Ontario Hockey League while playing there, has decided to end his career at the age of 25. Adam Mascherin, a native of Ontario, told reporters in Sweden that he's decided to retire as his body just can't keep up with the game any more.
Before being drafted into the NHL, Mascherin played for the Kitchener Rangers of the OHL, and put up great numbers, getting 80+ points in three straight season, with one of them being 100 points in 65 games. He was drafted in the second round (38th overall) by the Florida Panthers in 2016, but did not sign with the team and re-entered the draft in 2018. There, he was taken in the fourth round by the Dallas Stars.
Mascherin started his pro career with the Texas Stars of the AHL, where he spent three seasons. Unfortunately, the last two there were mired in injuries, and Mascherin spent the better part of two seasons on the sidelines. He then moved to Sweden, signing with Skelleftea AIK of the SHL. However, once again he would be hindered from playing regularly by injuries, and has now decided it's time to hang up the skates.
Mascherin told Norran.se that he has nothing but appreciation for the fans of Skelleftea.
"I really want to thank everyone who has supported me, everyone who said hello to me on the street or in the grocery store. I will always be grateful for all of you who made me feel like feel that Skelleftea was like my second home and it hurts me that I couldn't stay healthier during my time there because I would have really loved to play for Skelleftea for many, many, years.
Mascherin is now living in Gravenhurst, Ontario with his wife Makaela. He is working in sales.
