The Winnipeg Jets have had a mostly quiet off-season thus far, with about a week left in July, the question mark that was Pierre-Luc Dubois, at least for the time being appears to be solved. With rumours swirling over the past few weeks of an imminent trade, the young forward will stay in Winnipeg for the time being
According to Darren Dreger of TSN, PLD has accepted the Jets' qualifying offer of 6 million dollars for the 2022-23 National Hockey League season.
This doesn't quell the trade speculation around Dubois, in fact, it may do the exact opposite, I doubt Winnipeg will want to deal with this all over again by the time next off-season rolls around. Knowing he wants out and his preferred destination, all this will do, is make a trade to the Montreal Canadiens more likely.
Dubois, 24, had 60 points in 81 games for the Jets last season, including 28 goals and 32 assists.
However, is this a cautionary tale to any team looking to acquire the skilled forward in the future? If this trade request goes through, it will be his second team in the past two seasons, which doesn't look too good from an optics perspective.
By claiming the qualifying offer Dubois walks himself one year closer to unrestricted free agency and shows Dubois will likely do the same to any team who trades for him.
