Report - Toronto Maple Leafs grant William Nylander permission to speak to other teams
The William Nylander situation in Toronto is an extremely tricky one. At the core both Nylander and the Leafs hope to get a deal done, but that is easier said than done. At this point it appears both sides have dug in their heels and little progress has been made.
With the Leafs fighting for top spot in the Atlantic Division it seems unlikely the Leafs would consider trading Nylander at this point, but anything can happen. Today a report surfaces from Eklund of Hockey Buzz that the Toronto Maple Leafs have granted William Nylander's agent permission to speak to the Anaheim Ducks.
Now this report should be taken with a grain of salt, but according to Eklund this conversation began after a discussion about John Gibson.
Gibson is $6.4 million per year for three years following this one...
The Ducks seem to have enough suitors that they aren't likely to be picking up any of that salary. However, if they did the price would be much higher and the return would be much greater. While they aren't likely to eat cap money, they could take on salary, which is why there are rumblings that Anaheim may have been permitted to talk to the agent of the Leafs' William Nylander...
It is widely known that Nylander would like to play for the Kings in SoCal...you can still live in Manhattan Beach if you are a Duck...is this an option for Nylander?
While it is possible that the Leafs allowed Gross to discuss a potential deal for Nylander, a team like Anaheim doesn't make sense. The Ducks are still looking at a lengthy rebuild and adding on the large cap hit of Nylander doesn't make much sense.
Only time will tell if the Leafs are looking to get creative with this situation, but the longer he goes unsigned the more this circus will pickup.
