Ron MacLean has been on Canadian television for over 25 years. He is a polarizing figure with his long-winded stories, always being on the referees side of a controversial call, and of course his homerism of certain teams. At 62 years-old many believe the game of hockey has passed him by and it looks like some restructuring of Rogers' NHL coverage may be the first sign of that.

In Canada, Sportsnet is the sole television broadcaster of the NHL, minus a handful of regional games. Sportsnet is owned by Rogers Sports & Media and as with many large corporations, they are always looking at ways to save money. It seems like the first casualty of these cuts is «Hometown Hockey» which was hosted by Ron Maclean.
Now that Ron MacLean has lost some of his duties and won't be travelling as much, it looks like we'll see him more on the analyst desk. Sean Fitzgerald of The Athletic is reporting that Ron MacLean will stay on as the host of Hockey Night in Canada this coming season.
People have been clamouring for a change in the way hockey is covered on television. But it seems every time a rights holder changes they just bring the same ideas and people to their channel. Looks like it will be more of the same next year.
