San Jose Sharks dropped the ball and now their best trade chip has lost considerable value

At some point this season, it is likely that the San Jose Sharks will trade forward Timo Meier. There have been no contract extension talks and Meier is in the last year of his $6 million dollar a year deal. As is the case with most teams, the Sharks will likely trade him before this year's trade deadline.

NHL Insider Frank Seravalli comments that a Timo Meier return would be a lot less than what Chicago received for Alex DeBrincat. DeBrincat was traded for a first and second round pick this year and a 2024 third round pick. So, expect Meier to be traded for less. Last season it was rumored that multiple teams put forward very aggressive offers for Meier, but the Sharks preference was to hold onto the forward.

Timo Meier does have two previous thirty goals seasons on his resume, but he has never reached forty before. Meier is still an established goal scorer in the league. Meier has been a part of the Sharks organization for his entire career. He was drafted in the first round by San Jose in 2015.

The Sharks are looking to rebuild and add future assets either in high end prospects or a first-round pick. Surely some NHL franchise would like added scoring depth for this year's Stanley Cup playoffs and Meier would give a team some an added scoring threat. As the trade deadline gets closer, look to hear Meier's name mentioned in trade rumors.
