There was a time not all that long ago that many were wondering if goaltender Sergei Bobrovsky had lost it completely and would find himself outside of the NHL. That has since changed drastically, and Bobrovsky himself is adding some insight as to why.
Despite the fact that he, 's a three-time Stanley Cup-winning coach, Bobrovsky's worst stats in the league came under the leadership of Joel Quenneville. Quenneville remains a highly respected coach, despite his resignation in 2021 due to his involvement in the Kyle Beach-Chicago Blackhawks scandal. That said, Bobrovsky told Sport-Express.ru he never felt like part of the team under Quenneville.
"Yeah, Quenneville is a great coach. Won three Stanley Cups, and the guys loved playing for him. But as much as they enjoyed playing for him, it was just as hard for me. It's hard to say what would have happened if he had stayed with the club, but for me, playing under him is definitely the most challenging part of my career."
Bobrovsky was asked pointblank whether it was because of Quenneville's offensive style that he struggled, or whether it was his personal relationship with the coach. Bobrovsky said it was both.
"Overall a little bit of everything. I didn't feel part of the team. I felt like a separate person from the team. When we won, I didn't feel that I was part of the winning team. And when we lost, I felt that I was the reason they lost."
There has been talk lately of Quenneville possibly reentering the league as a coach. That will require a sign-off from Commissioner Gary Bettman in order to happen. Over parts of three seasons, Quenneville coached 132 games for the Panthers. In two playoffs appearances under him, Florida failed to make it out of the first round.
