Sheldon Keefe confirms just how embarrassing the Leafs cap situation is
Everyone in the league knows that the Toronto Maple Leafs cap situation is going to be a problem. The Leafs are currently only $4 under the league's salary cap ceiling sitting at $81,999,996. They couldn't be closer to the cap if they tried.
Ahead of tomorrow's season opener Sheldon Keefe made it clear that the salary cap not only cost Nick Robertson a job, but it also means that the Leafs might not even be able to ice a full lineup Wednesday night. With John Tavares nursing an oblique injury, the head coach confirmed that it Tavares isn't able to play the Maple Leafs will get required to play with only 11 forwards.
Keefe confirms the situation is thus that if Tavares cannot go for Wednesday that they would have to dress a short lineup.
It's embarrassing that a team to be compliant for the first game of the season would have to dress a short lineup. This is the situation that the salary cap has caused for many team, but it's hard to look at other sports and ever think an NFL team would be allowed to play with 1 less player on offense, or an MLB team could play without a right fielder.
So the question must be asked, is the cap the problem or the Leafs' cap management?
