The Vegas Golden Knights have signed centerman Nicolas Roy to a 5-year deal, as of today with an AAV of $3 million. Roy ended 2021-2022, with 15 goals and 24 assists, for 39 points, at this point a definite role play.

The aggressive power forward is big and strong, and he can dominate on the forecheck. Will go to the net and is beginning to show the kind of skill and scoring touch he had in junior hockey, which can earn him time on the power play. Can play in all situations, which also increases his ice time as he moves into his later 20s.

Roy's been in the organization for three years now and this past season was his best season in the league, after spending the majority of his time in the Hurricanes organization in the AHL with the Charlotte Checkers.

Roy has shown he has playoff capabilities as well, with 17 points in 39 games with the organization. His other accolades include winning a silver medal in 2017 with Canada's World Junior team.

With moving Max Pacioretty for nothing and signing Roy long-term, what is Kelly McCrimmon signaling? Are the Knight's looking at a possible retool?

Roy certainly has upside, but can Bruce Cassidy turn him into more than a role player? This signing also puts the Golden Knights $5,750,000 over the cap, so a corresponding move is definitely imminent.
