Tony DeAngelo officially signs a new NHL contract
Rumors began to swirl at the NHL draft that Tony DeAngelo would be traded from the Philadelphia Flyers to the Carolina Hurricanes. Unfortunately for Philadelphia, the NHL stepped in and blocked the initial trade. The league deemed this a circumvention of the salary cap despite the fact that DeAngelo had signed his contract with the Flyers and not the Hurricanes.
After weeks of waiting Philadelphia general manager Daniel Briere made the decision to place DeAngelo on unconditional waivers for a purposes of terminating his contract. This marked the second time that DeAngelo had his contract bought out. He had previously been bought out by the New York Rangers after a locker room altercation.
Today DeAngelo has officially signed a new contract with those very same. Carolina Hurricanes.
Hearing #Canes are closing in on an agreement with free agent Tony DeAngelo on a 1-year deal in the $1.6 million range. #LetsGoCanes
This deal returns Tony D to Carolina where he has some real success previously.
