Trevor Zegras could hold out signing contract with Ducks

Days after the Anaheim Ducks signed Troy Terry, their attention has shifted to their other young restricted free agent star, Trevor Zegras.

Under the new direction of Pat Verbeek, the Ducks seem to be making it a priority to sign their core players to long-term, team friendly deals, despite having ample cap space to overpay them. After a difference of $3.5M in arbitration filings, the Ducks signed Terry to a seven year, $7M annual deal.

That seems to be the approach to signing Trevor Zegras as well, but perhaps won't yield the same results. Zegras is the face of the youth movement in Anaheim which could drive up his asking price, despite his overall play under expectations.

When asked about his attitude and approach to the negotiations so far, Zegras left a familiar cold response, absolving himself of all responsibility and placing the onus on his agent. Zegras said, "Obviously, this is why you have people in place to handle this type of stuff. In the summertime I just have to keep doing my thing, what I've always done, and that stuff should take care of itself."

It's a familiar line of communication seen by restricted free agents, such as William Nylander, who have held out through preseason and regular season games. Now with Troy Terry signed, the Ducks will turn their attention to Zegras, hopefully signing him before training camp begins.
