Tributes Pour in from the Hockey World for Superfan Matthew Perry
The world was saddened last night to hear of the death of Matthew Perry, who was known to so many as Chandler Bing from the hit show Friends. While he's mostly being remembered for his impact on the entertainment world, Perry also has a connection to hockey, as many tributes from around the NHL have pointed out.
By way of background, Perry was born in Massachusetts, but moved to the Ottawa area at the age of one with his Canadian mother. Other than brief stints in Toronto and Montreal, Perry was mostly raised in Ottawa and introduced to hockey at a very young age. As such, he was a big fan of the Ottawa Senators, who called him "one of Ottawa's proudest sons and 𝑡ℎ𝑒 biggest hockey fan."
Perry's fandom wasn't just for Ottawa, though and he would be spotted at games in Los Angeles after moving there to further his acting career, as well as New York when he was in the area.
Meanwhile, several NHL teams played the theme song from Friends on Saturday as a way of paying their respects following Perry's untimely passing.
Perry starred in a commercial for the NHL in 1995, not long after the first few episodes of Friends hit TV screens.
Rest in Peace, fellow hockey fan Matthew Perry. Our thoughts are with his friends, family, and fans at this time.
