William Nylander and the Toronto Maple Leafs have had a rocky history when it comes to contract negotiations. Now it appears the Leafs and Nylander could be heading towards a similar situation again. Unfortunately for the Leafs, this time Nylander isn't a restricted free agent, and he'd be able to sign with any team in the league he'd like.
This week Nylander sat down with Jonas Siegel of The Athletic for a lengthy discussion and his contract situation was one of the primary topics they discussed. Nylander made it clear his intentions to win and his willingness to re-sign likely ties heavily to the Leaf's ability to advanced beyond the first round.
If we have a great year here, and we go deep, and hopefully do what we want to do then obviously it'd be unreal to stay obviously.
By all accounts Toronto has improved heading into this season. Then again, doesn't everyone say that every year? I don't blame Nylander for wanting to see how the season plays out before deciding if he wants to stay or not. However, the non committal message might be taken out of context by the majority of Leaf fans and media alike.
If Nylander puts up the kind of points he thinks he can this season, he very well may price himself out of Toronto. Which may not be the worst thing for the team. We'll see how this plays out for the regular season and beyond. If this is indeed his last stand with the Leafs, I want him to do well, on that, I probably stand alone.
