Alex Ovechkin gave Spencer Carbery's Capitals a pregame moment Sunday that felt bigger than the standings.

Before Washington's game against Pittsburgh, Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin and Kris Letang skated to center ice to stand beside Ovechkin for a picture.
For a rivalry that shaped a generation, that told the whole story.
This wasn't just another warmup gag for cameras.
It looked like three Penguins stars making sure they marked the night with the one rival who pushed them, chased them, and shared the era with them.
That's why the scene hit so hard.
Ovechkin and Crosby have been tied together for 20 years, and Malkin and Letang have been right there in the middle of it with Pittsburgh's core.
The four stars glided to the red line, leaned shoulder to shoulder, and held still while the rink buzzed around them.
It looked less like a joke and more like a hockey generation stopping for one last frame.
The emotion around it is easy to understand.
Ovechkin is in the final season of the 5-year, $47.5 million contract he signed in 2021, and the talk around his future has only grown louder this week.

A tribute that felt like a warning to the NHL: Ovechkin's retirement

Players know when a moment carries weight. Crosby, Malkin, and Letang did not drift over to center ice by accident.
They knew exactly what that Ovechkin's exit from the NHL is here.
The timing matters, too.
Ovechkin has 928 regular-season goals and 31 this season, so every game now feels split between the present chase and the possibility of goodbye.
Carbery has already made it clear the organization will support whatever Ovechkin decides.
That only adds to the sense that the final call is close, even if it is not made yet.
For fans, that warmup image lands harder than any speech.
Four franchise faces from one of hockey's defining rivalries paused everything for a single photo, and nobody had to explain why.
If this was not a farewell, it sure felt like the sport bracing for one.
And if Ovechkin does step away after this season, that picture beside Crosby, Malkin and Letang will stick for a long time.
