American Hockey Player Stuns Fans by Supporting Canadians Who Booed the US Anthem
An American hockey player stunned fans by supporting Canadians who booed the United States national anthem in recent weeks.
In the weeks leading up to the 4 Nations Face-Off, an unusual phenomenon has taken the spotlight away from the game: fans in Canada have been booing the United States national anthem.
This can be easily explained by the ongoing situation between Canada and the U.S., but let's not talk about that, shall we?
Yesterday, in the game between Canada and the United States, fans in attendance at the Bell Centre didn't hesitate to boo the anthem.
Before the game, players from both sides revealed how they didn't like hearing the fans boo the anthem.
Boston Bruins captain Brad Marchand was among them:
"They should not be booing the Americans during that anthem. They have nothing to do with the political things that are going on. I do feel bad for those guys in that moment. I don't think it's right."
Team Canada's head coach also shared his thoughts:
"Hopefully, it doesn't happen.
I think people have their personal feelings, and sometimes those feelings get mixed up. For me, the NHL is great because it brings together players from so many different countries. When they wear the home jersey, everyone cheers for them, but when they put on the away jersey, they get booed.
And I'm okay with that-like when William Nylander got booed during that game in Sweden. He wasn't being booed because he's Swedish; he was booed because he plays for the Leafs. That kind of interaction is just part of the game.
But when it comes to booing the anthem, that's different. These players are representing their countries, and that should be something to celebrate. Mixing those two things together clouds the issue.
I just think people should come to the game, enjoy the sport. I'd want the same for us when we play in other countries. These nations have been around long before us, and I think we should respect that." However, it happened, and American players responded on the ice. The Tkachuk brothers and J.T. Miller dropped the gloves in the first 10 seconds of the game.
They revealed after the game that they had planned to do it before the game, in response to fans booing the anthem for the past few weeks.
In a new development, we learned that an American player agreed with Canadians who booed the anthem. In fact, he stated in an anonymous text that he would've done a lot more if his freedom was threatened.

The United States won 3-1, locking their spot in the 4 Nations Face-Off Finals on Thursday at Td Garden in Boston.
