Alexandre Carrier is out 2 to 4 weeks, and Martin St-Louis now has to reshuffle his blue line at a critical stretch.

This isn't just a depth loss. Carrier had settled into a steady role, logging reliable minutes and helping stabilize second-pair matchups.
Now the Canadiens lose a right-shot option, and that changes how St-Louis balances his pairs heading into the next few games.
The timing matters. Montréal sits at 94 points through 73 games, and the push for positioning isn't slowing down.
Carrier's absence opens the door for a different look, and it won't be subtle.
Arber Xhekaj is expected to draw back in, bringing a heavier presence around the crease and along the boards.

Blue line identity is about to shift

Jayden Struble is also in line to stay in the lineup, which gives St-Louis a more physical, straight-line defensive group.
That likely means fewer clean breakouts but more bite in defensive zone coverage. It's a tradeoff the coaching staff is willing to make right now.
Xhekaj changes the tone instantly. He closes gaps hard and doesn't hesitate to engage, which can tilt momentum but also demands discipline.
Struble, on the other hand, has been more controlled in his reads. He keeps plays simple and limits risk, which fits this situation.
The bigger question is deployment. Without Carrier, those second-pair minutes need to be redistributed, and that can stretch other defenders.
Lane Hutson and Mike Matheson could see increased usage, especially on transition shifts and puck-moving situations.
Montréal has allowed 233 goals this season, so tightening things up without sacrificing pace becomes the balancing act.
This isn't a long-term crisis. But for the next couple weeks, every matchup on the back end gets a little more complicated.
And if Xhekaj and Struble hold their ground, St-Louis might find something he didn't expect heading into the final stretch.
