After terminating the contract of head coach Jim Montgomery, Boston Bruins General Manager Don Sweeney has issued a warning to players and staff
Just one day after he fired head coach Jim Montgomery, Don Sweeney has issued a stern warning to players and team staff.
Boston Bruins General Manager Don Sweeney met with members of the media today to discuss the team's performance in light of firing the Bruins head coach. He made it clear players aren't performing the way they should be, and a lack of improvement will mean more changes across the board.
Don Sweeney, who previously explained why he fired Jim Montgomery, also revealed a bit of a shocker at the meeting with reporters. He said he had been working on an extension with Montgomery, but he was not successful, and it was that and the team's performance that led to cutting him loose.
While Sweeney appears to be ready to bring down the hammer, there are plenty of fans who feel any changes should start with him. He has been the team's GM since 2015, with the team making the Stanley Cup Final once in that time.
While there was some speculation that Jim Montgomery had lost the room as head coach of the Boston Bruins, Don Sweeney rejected that theory with reporters.
"No. You can't say that Monty came in and made a positive influence and connection with players for two-plus seasons and then turn around and say they just tuned him out. They haven't performed at the level they need to. That's as simplistic as I say. Monty's a great coach."
We'll now have to wait and see what happens if the players don't improve under interim head coach Joe Sacco. In the meantime, there are likely some nervous people within the Boston Bruins organization.
