It's an end of an era for hockey fans as CapFriendly has officially shut down their website overnight.

CapFriendly's time as a public tool for all things relating to the National Hockey League's salary cap, player contracts and much more is officially over as of last night following the completion of their sale to the Washington Capitals.

If anyone tries to go onto CapFriendly's website after midnight last night, a message pops up thanking people for their support and interest over the last nine years.

"Thank You!

After 9 years of late nights, early mornings, missed holidays and family events while diligently updating the website and developing tools, the CapFriendly team has made the decision to begin a new chapter and challenge!

We couldn't be more thankful for the support and interest in CapFriendly our fans have shown over the years.

We'd also like to give a special thank you to:
- Guillaume Lambert-Heon (French Translations)
- Tim Hiebert (Depth Charts)
- CapFriendly Forum moderators
- Evolving-Hockey
- Sportsnet
- Sports Interaction
- Elite Prospects
- Jason Bukala and The Pro Hockey Group
- Steve Dangle, Adam Wylde, and Jesse Blake of SDPN
- The Daily Faceoff and Frank Seravalli
- Those who reached out to assist us with suggestions and corrections

Sincerely,
The CapFriendly Team"

The reasoning behind the sale to the Washington Capitals is still not known, nor has it been officially acknowledged by CapFriendly or the team, as of yet. Thankfully for hockey fans and teams, there are a couple of alternatives.

One website that hockey fans can use that is similar to CapFriendly, but without some of the tools they had, is PuckPedia, while another is Spotrac. While there's no doubt that fans will miss CapFriendly and the services they offered, PuckPedia and Spotrac will do a great job at filling the massive hole left behind.
