The Toronto Maple Leafs made a deal yesterday to acquire the signing rights of veteran defender Chris Tanev from the Dallas Stars. This gave them the opportunity to talk to Tanev before free agency opens tomorrow.
As expected, Chris Tanev has just signed in Toronto, but the terms of the deal are going to have some band questioning whether or not he's actually worth it.
According to Kevin Weekes Tanev has signed a contract with the Leafs with an AAV of 5M per season, although the term of the deal isn't known yet.

Tanev, 34, played in 75 games last season split between the Calgary Flames and Dallas Stars collecting 19 points, including 2 goals and 17 assists. He of course is known as a shutdown defender however and is a huge upgrade on the defensive end.
The AAV is high And with the term not yet known, it is more than likely that It is a shorter term deal, but we have to wait and see for the official number of years to come out. Either way the leafs get the upgrade they wanted on the back end, Just at a little bit of a steeper price.
