Cole Caufield illness scare forces Montreal Canadiens to juggle lines in playoff race

Cole Caufield's sudden illness scare left the Montreal Canadiens holding their breath as the playoff push tightens.
It started Tuesday against the Toronto Maple Leafs, when Caufield looked uncomfortable late in the second period and missed shifts.
Fans were weary something was off, and unfortunately, they were right.
On the bench, it read like a lower-body issue in real time. The club's messaging afterward pointed to sickness, not structure.
That difference matters, because «illness» can flip overnight. One day you travel, the next you are stapled to the couch.
Eric Engels reported Caufield was battling illness during the third period, and there was optimism he would travel for the next one.
Then Wednesday came, and the update landed hard. Renaud Lavoie reported Caufield would miss the Ottawa game due to illness, with Alexandre Texier stepping in.
Cole Caufield absence tests the Montreal Canadiens
You could feel the fanbase tense up, because Montreal has seen «small» health issues snowball at the worst time.
The hockey impact is obvious. Caufield drives the top-six finishing and gives the man advantage its one-touch threat from the flank.
He has 37-27-64 through 63 games this season, and that kind of production does not get replaced by committee.
The timing is brutal, too. The Canadiens are 36-18-10 and sitting in a packed Atlantic picture where every point feels like a tiebreaker.
If it stays strictly illness, the best-case scenario is short-term rest and a quick reset. If there's anything more underneath it, the staff has to protect him from himself.
The next few practices will tell the story. Either Caufield pops back in with his usual jump, or the Canadiens keep patching the right side and hoping the goals hold.
