Connor Hellebuyck and Scott Arniel head into a long summer with one big question hanging over the Winnipeg Jets crease.
Hellebuyck didn't slam any doors Friday.
But he didn't calm the room either.
After a season he called unacceptable, the Jets goalie was asked whether this year would make him re-evaluate his future in Winnipeg.
He paused, then gave an answer that left plenty of space for doubt.
That's the part fans will latch onto.
When a franchise goalie stops for that long before answering a question about his future, it lands harder than any canned exit-day line.
It felt like a player weighing more than one bad season.
Hellebuyck owned his share of the collapse.
He said the step back from a Presidents' Trophy season felt wrong, and admitted he was a big part of it.
The video only added to the tension.
His eyes stay forward, the silence stretches, and the pause feels heavier than the words that follow.
Take a look:
Connor Hellebuyck’s long pause leaves Jets fans wondering about his future in Winnipeg
This isn't about one rough week.
Winnipeg finished 35-35-12 and missed the playoffs one year after sitting at the top of the league.
Hellebuyck's own numbers dipped with the team.
He closed the season with a 2.86 goals-against average and a .895 save percentage after setting a far higher bar for himself.
That's why his follow-up mattered just as much as the pause.
He said looking at the future takes time and pointed to a familiar issue in Winnipeg: whether the organization can get the pieces it needs.
That's where fan anxiety kicks in.
He also said he has made Winnipeg his home and likes it there.
But he added that much of the league does not feel the same way, which speaks to the challenge of building and maintaining a contender in that market.
Arniel now heads into an offseason where every move around the roster will be viewed through that lens.
If the Jets can steady the group fast, the noise settles.
If they can't, every Hellebuyck comment will get picked apart.
In this market, franchise goalies don't leave room for uncertainty unless uncertainty is real.
That doesn't mean Connor Hellebuyck is on his way out.
It does mean fans have every reason to wonder how long his future still lines up with the organization's.
