New York Rangers beat reporter Larry Brooks was a titan of the hockey journalism world, and this past week, he unfortunately passed away at 75.
Even if you don't follow the New York Rangers too closely, you probably knew who Larry Brooks was. He was the Rangers beat writer for the New York Post, and he was known for his honest and sometimes controversial columns.
Although he was always fair, there were some people out there who didn't love his coverage. John Tortorella is one of them.
However, there were plenty of people who loved Brooks. That love is being shown today as the hockey writer unfortunately passed away at the age of 75.
Sean Avery and James Dolan pay homage to Larry Brooks
In a lovely obituary from The New York Post, people like Sean Avery and New York Rangers owner James Dolan spoke out about the man.
Avery, for instance, always felt a deep respect for Brooks, and understood just how important his role was for the team.
«I like to think that I was a guy who could change the momentum of a game when I came on the ice,» Avery said. «Brooksie could do that with the swipe of his pen. The guys that really understood playing for the Rangers all had a good relationship with Brooksie because he loves hockey players."
As for James Dolan, he remembered his various conversations with Brooks fondly.
Per James Dolan:
Besides the stellar job that Larry did covering the New York Rangers, what few people know is that he and I would meet on occasion and he would give me his unabashed opinion on how the franchise was doing and what we needed to do to win. This never appeared in any of his columns, but I found his advice to be invaluable and will miss it dearly.
We send our condolences to Brooks' family during this difficult time.
