The hockey world was struck with heartbreaking news this week as former Toronto Maple Leafs and Detroit Red Wings forward Mark Kirton has passed away at the age of 67 following a lengthy fight with ALS.

Kirton, drafted 48th overall by the Maple Leafs, spent eight seasons in the NHL, suiting up for Toronto, Detroit, and later the Vancouver Canucks. Known for his gritty play and ability to chip in offensively, he played 266 NHL games and recorded 113 points.
Beyond the numbers, Kirton became an inspiring figure in the hockey community after his ALS diagnosis in 2018. He worked tirelessly to raise awareness, founding ALS Action Canada and pushing for more support for patients and families.

Kirton's courage drew admiration from fans, teammates, and hockey legends alike. Wayne Gretzky and Edmonton Oilers president Jeff Jackson were among those who stood by him during his fight.
In 2020, Kirton partnered with fellow PALS (Patients with ALS) to lead initiatives searching for a cure. His leadership earned him the Carl Brewer Memorial Award from the Leafs Alumni Association, honoring his dedication and advocacy.
The Blade of Steel family also extends its heartfelt condolences to Mark's loved ones, friends, and the entire hockey community.
«Mark was not only a player who gave his all on the ice, but a fighter who gave everything he had off of it,» the family expressed.

Kirton's story is a reminder of how the hockey world rallies in times of hardship.
«He was determined to make a difference, not only for himself but for everyone touched by ALS,» one close friend noted.

Personally, I think his courage in the face of such a cruel disease is what will define his legacy as much as his years in the NHL.
Mark Kirton leaves behind a legacy of resilience, compassion, and leadership. His fight will continue to inspire those battling ALS and those supporting them.
