Never one to back down from speaking his mind, Don Cherry enamored millions of Canadians throughout the years with his Coach's Corner segments during the first intermission on CBC's Hockey Night in Canada broadcasts.
His lavish suits often tried to deflect his egregious opinions, spurring parity for the sake of a personal bias, whether it be against a player or for a team. But a few too many harsh barbs ended up getting Cherry fired in 2019, and now he focuses on his 'Don Cherry Podcast' that's ran since his departure.
Well, five years later, the man affectionately known as 'Grapes' hasn't changed his mind regarding his stance on how Canadians should be more appreciative and respectful of Canada's veterans (for lack of better phrasing).
While it's understandable why Cherry would frown upon the lack of poppies, it's a lack of Canadians as a whole who are neglecting the poppy, and it's not malicious. In an age of technology and debit cards, many people don't carry change to buy one, and aren't going to steal one.
But if you ask Cherry if he would take back what he said that got him fired, ironically on Remembrance Day; he would be quite forward with you:
However, Cherry does have some regrets about having to leave, perhaps questioning his choice of words and maybe if he could have gotten his point across otherwise:
Cherry hasn't stayed away from the game, with the aforementioned podcast, and while he stays away from the mainstream, he still manages to reach an audience who revere and respect the long-time pundit. We won't see Cherry back on TV anytime soon, but that's okay. Cherry's moved on, and so should we.
