The NHL trade deadline has officially passed, but the drama in Edmonton is seemingly just beginning.
What was supposed to be a stabilizing season in the crease has instead become a massive lightning rod for controversy. Now, it appears the frustration is completely spilling over into the locker room.
According to a recent report, prominent insider Bob Stauffer alluded to some serious internal strife brewing between the Edmonton Oilers leadership core and highly scrutinized goaltender Tristan Jarry during a segment on Oilers Now.
When general manager Stan Bowman aggressively traded homegrown talent Stuart Skinner, veteran defenseman Brett Kulak, and a future second-round draft pick to the Pittsburgh Penguins in December to acquire Jarry, it was heavily criticized as a massive gamble.
Fans and analysts alike have sarcastically dubbed it "the trade that keeps on giving" to the Penguins.
A fractured locker room in Oil Country?
For an Oilers team that desperately needs "solid execution" from the crease to capitalize on the prime years of their generational superstars, Jarry's recent performances have provided the exact opposite.
After being abruptly pulled in recent critical matchups following disastrous defensive breakdowns, Jarry's candid post-game comments seemingly deflected some of the blame onto the team's defensive structure, which has reportedly rubbed the veteran leadership the wrong way.
Instead of providing a "clean slate" and a confidence "bump" down the stretch, the Oilers are now navigating a highly tense situation. If the leaders of the team have lost faith in their starting goaltender, the path to the Stanley Cup becomes infinitely harder.
While Bowman recently reinforced the blue line at the deadline, the glaring issue in net remains entirely untouched.
The Oilers are officially locked in with Jarry, and head coach Kris Knoblauch is now forced to rapidly repair a potentially fractured locker room before the playoffs begin.
