Former NHLer and Barstool personality Ryan Whitney is taking a beating online after a post about the Boston Bruins and Toronto Maple Leafs that included a picture
He may be retired from the NHL, but Ryan Whitney's brash attitude continued into the next step in his career, becoming a personality with Barstool Sports, which owns the rights to the Spittin' Chiclets podcast. Whitney has had to deal with plenty of controversy since then, and it continues with his latest social media post about the 2024 Stanley Cup Playoffs series between the Toronto Maple Leafs and Boston Bruins.
Following a Maple Leafs loss to the Bruins in their last game, which gave Boston a solid 3-1 series lead, Whitney shared a post that contained what look to be an AI-generated picture. Many are calling it tasteless, misogynistic, and tone deaf at a time when hockey is facing a lot of overdue talk about the sport's culture.
It didn't take long for X users to pile on Whitney's post.
"I'm not a fan of the Leafs but what Ryan Whitney posted earlier today was way offside. That is not okay.
Sadly, terrible people are going to use AI for awful reasons. Block and report. Don't share, don't re-post."
"Just when you thought hockey culture couldn't get any worse, Ryan Whitney is here to remind us how comparable being forcefully r---- is to losing a hockey game.
#LOSER
Whitney, who played 481 games in the NHL over the course of his career, has not responded to the many replies containing criticism in any way. At least not online. Barstool has a controversial reputation as a content creator and digital media company. It's owner Dave Portnoy has often been accused of supporting and promoting opinions that many find polarizing.
