Former Humboldt Broncos goaltender Jacob Wassermann a survivor of the 2018 bus crash that claimed the lives of many of his teammates and support staff made his debut at the Paralympic games this past weekend in Paris, France.
Wassermann who took up the sport of Para rowing less than two years ago had set his sights on the Paralympics in 2028 in LA, however, he qualified for this summer's games earlier this summer at the World Championships. Wasserman rowed in the B final finishing fourth in the 2000M race at Vaires-sur-Maine Stadium with a time of 11 minutes 58.90 seconds.
Wassermann is an example of triumph over tragedy. While there is nothing wrong with being disabled, he has managed to survive a bus crash and work towards a goal which was to make a Paralympics.
"This is my second summer on the water only. It's been a quick process and not something that we expected," Wassermann said after Tuesday's training session. "Six months ago, even when I was in Rio and got the qualification [at the Americas Continental Qualification Regatta] - we went to Rio just to get more experience. "It's been a whirlwind, but it's been a lot of fun."
With his paralympic debut over, we should expect to see him in Los Angeles in four years dawning the Red and White and the Maple Leaf for Canada and while he wasn't even expected to be In Paris he'll be more than ready to compete in 2028.
