Gary Bettman Publicly Blasts Paul Bissonnette Over Florida Tax Rant Live on TNT
Much has been made over the tax advantage some teams in the NHL have over others, but now, Gary Bettman has blasted the idea live on TNT.
In recent weeks, given the consistent success of the Florida Panthers, many people have brought up the issue that states with no taxes have major advantages over those that do, with even some calling for the league to look into it in their current CBA negotiations.
One person that has been most vocal about it is Paul Bissonnette on both the Spittin' Chiclets podcast and his appearances on NHL on TNT, and while it makes for good television to bring up controversial topics like this, it doesn't appear as though the NHL are looking to make a change.
That was confirmed ahead of Game 3 by Commissioner Gary Bettman, who called out 'Biz' for his comments, labelling them as ridiculous as he reveals that it's not an issue the NHL would consider look into.
On this issue, there's arguments to be made on both sides, but this isn't a new thing, as these advantages have been in place for decades now, but it's only when the Panthers and Lightning have had sustained success that the issue started being raised over the league.
On the surface though, it's easy to see why this is an advantage, as a team paying someone $10 million will get the same buying power as a team in Florida paying significantly less, which does give a major advantage.
Ultimately though, it's the same with every sport, and one day these powerhouse teams will go through their times of struggle and it won't seem such a big advantage at that point, and for now, there's no change anticipated.
