mourning the passing of longtime security executive Dennis Cunningham, who served as the Executive Vice President of Security from 1993 to 2021.
The NHL released the following statement on their Public Relations X account:
The NHL family mourns the passing of Dennis Cunningham, who served the League with distinction and unwavering commitment for 28 years, from 1993 to 2021, as Executive Vice President of Security.
NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman also delivered a statement of sympathy:
Originally from Queens, New York, Cunningham rose through the ranks of the New York Police Department after earning advanced degrees from John Jay College and St. John's University. Additionally, he graduated from the FBI Academy and the Columbia University School of Business.
He is a former 2013 recipient of the Distinguished Leadership Award, which goes to a professional in the security field that 'has demonstrated a career full of achievement and contribution with respect to sport safety and security'.
I am grateful to be the recipient of the Center's Distinguished Leadership Award and would like to extend my thanks to all who have had a part in organizing this award. Together, the NCS4 and the University of Southern Mississippi are known for their focus on research, education, and outreach to the sports event security community, and to be recognized by them is an honor.
He is survived by his wife Brigitta Cunningham and was preceded in passing by his son Michael Cunningham.
