The Utah Grizzlies, West Valley City's ECHL staple since 1995, are now expected to be sold and relocated after the City Council unanimously voted to approve the team's sale to Pro Hockey Partners LLC, clearing the way for a departure that ends nearly 30 years of hockey at the Maverik Center.
During Tuesday's council meeting, longtime council member Don Christensen summed up the mood, saying «Reluctantly, but yes» as he voted in favor of authorizing the sale.
The city has owned a 40% stake in the Grizzlies since 2009, when it intervened to help settle the team's $600,000 debt and keep the franchise afloat.
Now, with co-owner Donna Tuttle facing health challenges following the death of founder David Elmore, the Elmore family can no longer manage operations.
