The NHL's current CBA was up at the end of the 2025/26 season, but now Gary Bettman has put the fans worries to rest by officially signing a new CBA with the NHLPA.

The current Collective Bargaining Agreement between the National Hockey League and the NHLPA was set to expire in September of 2026, but on Tuesday, Gary Bettman and the NHL made a massive announcement.
According to a press release, the NHL and the NHLPA have come to an agreement on a new CBA that will run through the end of the 2029/30 season, giving plenty of stability for the fans, organizations and the league itself.
In his statement about the new CBA, NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman was thrilled to get a deal done to avoid any potential lockouts, stating that the relationship between the players association and the NHL has never been stronger.
"The partnership between the Players' Association and the League is stronger than it ever has been and working together under this agreement presents a fantastic opportunity to continue to grow the game.

We are grateful to the Board of Governors for its support of this agreement that strengthens our game and ensures we are collectively delivering a great fan experience in the years to come."
The sentiment expressed by Bettman was shared by NHLPA Executive Director Marty Walsh as well, as he called this a 'win for everyone' in his comments after the announcement.
"This CBA shows what can be accomplished when the NHL and the Union work together - an agreement that will allow for the continued worldwide growth of the game. That is a win for everyone.

We could not have achieved this outcome without the involvement and support of our players. Special thanks to our Executive Board and Negotiating Committee."

This deal will benefit everyone involved, but especially the players, as a rising salary cap means players are better compensated for their work, and with more salary cap space and stability, organizations can move forward with more confidence, flexibility and stability as they look to build winning teams to chase down the Stanley Cup.
As for the fans, this means that the league won't face any potential lockouts until at least the 2030/31 season, and with the stability with the league and the NHLPA, this will allow for more global events, full seasons without any worry and the best hockey imaginable for the foreseeable future.
Ultimately, this is simply a win all around, with everyone from the fans, the players and the league coming out stronger, and with the growth around the NHL, things should continue trending in the right direction.
