Jack Hughes returned for the New Jersey Devils, carrying Team USA gold and raw emotion into a loud Prudential Center ovation.

New Jersey leaned into the moment with a pre-game ceremony, welcoming back Hughes and the team's Olympians.
The coolest touch came fast, Hughes pulled Tage Thompson onto the ice with him so the crowd could give both Americans their flowers.
It was simple, but it landed, because Devils fans have watched this season wobble and they needed something pure.
The Devils are 28-27-2, and the margin is thin when your offense sits near the bottom of the league.
That's why Hughes speaking to the crowd hit different, it wasn't a marketing beat, it was a player trying to share something real.
On the men's side, Team USA beat Canada 2-1 in overtime in the gold medal game, with Hughes scoring the golden goal 1:41 into OT.
That goal is going to live forever in American hockey lore, and you could see it on his face when he grabbed the mic.

Jack Hughes turns New Jersey Devils pride into urgency

Devils fans have been stressed for months, so hearing Hughes soak it in felt like a needed exhale, and also a reminder that this group still has fight.
The women delivered the same punch in Milan, Team USA rallied late and won 2-1 in overtime on a golden goal from Megan Keller.
Hilary Knight forced OT with a late tying goal, then Keller ended it, and the double-gold wave turned into a full-on hockey celebration.
Hughes didn't just talk about his own moment, he framed it as men and women pushing the crest together, in the same tournament window.
Back in New Jersey, that matters, because leadership isn't only points, it's giving the room a reason to believe again.
Now the hard part starts, carrying that standard into NHL games where there are no medals, only two points on the line.
Thursday's next test comes fast, and the Devils need Hughes to turn ceremony energy into top-six offense right away.
