Marco Sturm took aim at Lindy Ruff before Game 1, and the Bruins coach just gave the Buffalo Sabres fresh fuel.
The story moved Sunday when Sturm spoke ahead of Boston's playoff opener against Buffalo.
The tone wasn't cautious. It was direct, loud, and built to get around the room fast.
Boston is heading into the opening round with a lot of belief, and Sturm made sure everyone heard it.
He framed the matchup around one thing first: size and bite.
“We know how we have to play, we are gonna be ready to go, we're excited,” said Sturm. “We are bigger, stronger, we are more physical.”
That's not the kind of line that stays quiet on the other bench. It lands like a challenge, especially with puck drop this close and emotions already running high.
Sturm didn't stop at the Bruins' identity. He also turned the focus toward Ruff, and that's where this got a lot more personal ahead of the series opener.
Sturm puts the pressure on his own bench
“In the past Lindy was not really a big matchup guy,” said Sturm. “He did his thing so we'll see where it goes, maybe he does it different in the playoffs. But we don't really care.”
That line changes the temperature around Game 1. It's no longer just about special teams, matchups, or who controls the pace through the neutral zone. Now there's pride attached to it.
The Sabres don't need extra motivation in the playoffs, but Sturm handed them some anyway. Ruff now has a clean message for his bench before the opening faceoff.
There's another side to this too. When a coach talks this boldly before the first game of a series, his own players have to back it up. Anything less puts the spotlight right back on him.
That's what makes this more than pre-series chatter. Sturm didn't just praise his club. He raised the stakes for Boston and gave Buffalo a reason to push back early.
If the Bruins come out flying, Sturm looks like a coach who read the room perfectly. If they don't, the Sabres will remember every word.
