Matthew Tkachuk won't be with Paul Maurice in Montreal Tuesday, and the Florida Panthers have a far better reason than hockey.

Tkachuk has stepped away from the team so he can be at the hospital for the birth of his first child.
This is not an injury story, and it is not a setback.
That matters right away, because any time Tkachuk leaves the group, fans naturally wonder about his health.
In this case, the news out of Florida is personal, joyful, and easy for the locker room to rally around.
Maurice kept it light when he addressed the move, making it clear the winger left the team because he and his wife are waiting for their baby to arrive.
That instantly changed the tone around the absence.
Florida can deal with a short-term lineup adjustment.
The Panthers know what Tkachuk brings to the top six, to the power play, and to the emotional edge of the bench, but this is bigger than one road game.
It also says plenty about the room Maurice coaches. On a tight schedule, teams don't hand out many pauses. This one was never going to be debated.

A Panthers absence with a very different tone

For Florida, the hockey side is simple. When Tkachuk is out, somebody else gets more touches, a bump in usage, and a chance to handle tougher minutes.
The human side is what stands out here.
Per HC Paul Maurice, Matthew Tkachuk did not travel to Montreal as he and his wife await the arrival of their first child.

“Real good news, a lot of babies this year.”
Players talk all the time about brotherhood, family, and culture. This is one of those moments where a club gets to prove it lives that, not just sells it.
There's also no reason for panic.
Tkachuk didn't leave because of a nagging issue, and he didn't get scratched for a coach decision. He left because life moved faster than the Panthers' travel plans.
That should calm a fan base that has seen enough real injury chatter around key players over the past year.
A hospital visit for a birth is the kind of absence everyone in the room signs off on without a second thought.
It's also the kind of moment players remember.
Years from now, nobody inside that room will care about one missed trip nearly as much as they'll remember Tkachuk being where he needed to be.
So yes, Florida loses a major presence for the moment. But the Panthers aren't losing Matthew Tkachuk to bad news.
They're watching one of their biggest stars step into fatherhood, and that lands a lot differently than any lineup note.
