Neck guards have become a major part of hockey in recent times, and now, wearing one has thankfully saved the life of a young hockey player.
In recent times, we've seen some devastating and tragic injuries caused from players taking skate cuts all over their body, but as a result of the tragedy in the UK, leagues around the world have been forced to improve their protective gear, with many mandating protective neck guards.
Now, in Wyoming, a neck guard has saved the life of an 11-year old hockey player, Carter Lein, who was cut to the neck while playing in a game in one of the scariest moments of his life for him and his family.
His mom was especially terrified, noting that it was every parents worst nightmare, as she continually had to re-assure her 11-year old son that everything was going to be okay.
«You hear about these things happening, but you don't ever think it could happen to you. It was every parent's worst nightmare.
It was heartbreaking. He kept telling me 'I'm so scared, I don't know what to do.'»
Recounting the tragic event in an interview with the New York Post, noting that the cut caught him just inches from a major artery, but at this point, he's on the mend after 911 was quickly called and it appears he's going to make a full recovery.
Thankfully, he was wearing a league mandated neck guard, and it helped protect him in a major way, and while it's tough to tell whether things would have been different without it, it's safe to say that it's a good idea for every player at a lower level to wear one.
Everything will ultimately be okay for Carter, whose mom revealed that he is undecided if he wants to return to hockey, but at the end of the day, he's going to be okay after the neck guard helped him escape tragedy in what could have been a terrible story.
