The NHL's Winter Classic was another great event for the league, but on social media, their decision to use The Smashing Pumpkins has come under major scrutiny.
Despite the criticism of the NHL hosting the 2025 Winter Classic on the same day as 12 other games, the event was seemingly a huge hit, with just under 41,000 fans in attendance to see the St. Louis Blues battle the Chicago Blackhawks.
During the game, the home town Blackhawks struggled mightily as they were blown away 6-2 on the back of a 3-0 second period from the Blues, with most reviews of the game being highly positive.
Unfortunately, according to many fans on social media at the event complained about the choice of The Smashing Pumpkins as a musical act, with heavy criticism about the way they sounded.
While it may not have been the worst right in front of the stage, those fans sitting in the seats certainly weren't happy, with some scathing reviews of how this hurt the event for those in attendance.
"Holy (expletive) does smashing pumpkins sound absolutely horrendous at the winter classic"
"I'm very impressed by how effortless it seems for Smashing Pumpkins to play Tonight, Tonight. However what the (expletive) is Billy Corgan saying"
"Smashing Pumpkins is playing "Tonight, Tonight" opening for the NHL Winter Classic and they sound like (expletive). Billy Corgan sounds like his throat was scrubbed with sand paper"
The rock band has been very iconic for decades now, with Billy Corgan a huge name in the music world, but unfortunately, it just appears that they weren't the right fit for the day and the NHL on this occasion.
Ultimately, the NHL needs to make their event much more of a spectacle that should stand alone in the league's calendar, and bringing much bigger and better musical acts will certainly help that, so hopefully the league can be better when next season's Winter classic rolls around.
