NHL's sought after free agent prospect T.J. Hughes signs with Western Conference organization
T.J. Hughes gives Jared Bednar a new forward to track after Colorado landed one of college hockey's most wanted free agents.
That matters because Hughes was not some late-spring flier.
He was a Hobey Baker finalist and the captain at Michigan, which put him near the top of the NCAA free-agent board.
Colorado are betting on production first.
Hughes finished this season with 56 points in 39 games, including 21 goals and 35 assists.
He also brought detail down the middle.
Hughes won 57.1% of his faceoffs and was named the Big Ten Player of the Year, which tells you this was more than a hot scoring run.
That's why the market around him got loud in a hurry.
Reports tied Edmonton to Hughes before Colorado closed the door, with the Oilers listed among the clubs pushing for his signature.
From Colorado's side, the fit is easy to see.
The Avalanche have long leaned on speed and quick puck support, and Hughes plays with enough pace and touch to stay in that conversation.
Why Colorado won this race
This chase was never only about money.
Because Hughes is an older undrafted college free agent, teams were selling role, path, and timing more than contract muscle.
Colorado could sell all three.
Bednar has room to look at Hughes in the bottom six, on a second power-play unit, or in a call-up lane if the organization likes his camp and early pro detail.
Edmonton had a case too, especially for a player who can think the game and support stars without needing the puck every shift.
That's what made Hughes such a sought-after name in the first place.
But Colorado offer a cleaner hockey pitch right now.
Hughes can arrive without the same spotlight, earn trust, and work his way into a lineup that still values smart depth around elite skill.
His college résumé backs that bet.
He led Michigan in scoring in each of the past 2 seasons and wore the captain's letter on a Frozen Four team.
Michigan's year ended in a 4-3 double-overtime loss to Denver, and that only sped up the signing rush around Hughes.
Colorado moved fast and came out with the player.
Now the next question is simple. Did the Avalanche just grab a depth forward for later, or did they find a player who can push for NHL minutes sooner than most college free-agent signings do?
