NHL insider Pierre LeBrun confirmed big changes are coming to the NHL, starting with the next season’s start date and its first official 84-game schedule.
The league hasn’t locked it in yet, but this is the clearest framework teams have received.
LeBrun outlined a regular season running from Sept. 29 to April 10. That shifts both the opening and closing dates.
And the big change sits right in the middle. The NHL is moving to an 84-game schedule.
Two extra games might not sound dramatic. Over six months, it adds real strain.
Travel days don’t change much. The games just stack tighter around them.
That means less recovery, especially during heavy road trips and back-to-back sets.
Coaches facing tougher workload balance in upcoming 84-game season
Training camps will feel different right away. A late-September puck drop shortens the runway.
Veterans won’t ease in the same way. Coaching staffs will push pace earlier.
Fringe players could lose opportunities to earn spots. Fewer exhibition reps raise the stakes.
Once the season starts, lineup management becomes a nightly challenge.
Top-six forwards and top-pair defensemen can’t carry the same load every night.
Expect more rotation on the fourth line and third pair to keep legs fresh.
Goaltending usage becomes even more strategic. An extra two games can shift how tandems are deployed.
Special teams could be hit hardest. Fatigue tends to show first on the power play and penalty kill.
The April 10 finish keeps the playoff window steady. That part stays familiar.
But getting there will feel heavier. The grind stretches earlier and packs tighter.
LeBrun noted the dates are still subject to change. Still, teams are already planning around this structure.
For fans, a shorter offseason is what they have been dreaming about for years. A September puck drop would certainly be welcomed by most fan bases around the NHL.
