Last night, Team Canada won in overtime over Sweden in the opening match of the Four Nations Tournament.
Unfortunately though, the team lost a key defenseman due to injury early in the game and he is now out for the tournament.
That was Vegas Golden Knights defenseman Shea Theodore, who has 7 goals and 48 points in 55 games for the team this season.
The Golden Knights announced that he is out week-to-week this morning.
As a result, Team Canada is now down to just six blueliners for the rest of the tournament.
Of course, this would mean that if they suffer another injury they would be short-handed.
Luckily, they are allowed to bring in another defenseman from the NHL as an emergency backup just in case that does happen.
NHL insider Chris Johnston revealed this afternoon that the team has called upon Dallas Stars defenseman Thomas Harley to fill that role.
Unfortunately, Harley will not be able to participate in practice with the team unless another injury does occur.
As Johnston writes, Harley will be in Boston in case he needs to be called upon, but until that time comes he is not permitted to suit up with the team.
Hopefully the Canadians do not suffer any more injuries, but Harley is a very good young defenseman who will be able to step up for them if need be, so the team is in good hands.
