‘That's just stupidity': Jon Cooper furious over costly mistake in game 1 loss to Montreal

Juraj Slafkovsky burned Tampa Bay, and Jon Cooper didn't wait to call out what really cost the Lightning in Game 1.
The Montreal Canadiens stunned the Lightning 4-3 in overtime on Sunday night, and the story changed fast once the final horn hit.
This wasn't just about Slafkovsky's hat trick, even if his power-play winner finished the game and flipped home ice in one swing.
It was about Tampa Bay handing Montreal too many openings, especially late, in a playoff game that was there to be won.
The teams were tied 3-3 heading into overtime, but the Lightning had already put themselves in a bad spot with a Jake Guentzel high-sticking penalty.
Montreal cashed in on that chance, and Cooper came out of the loss with no patience for what he saw from his bench.
Cooper puts the blame on his own team
During his postgame media session, Cooper was asked what led to the loss, and he didn't dance around it.
“I have a problem with us. We took four offensive zone penalties. That's not over aggression that's just stupidity. That was on us it was a game where we just gave them every opportunity to win.”
That quote tells you exactly where the Lightning coach's head is after one playoff game. He wasn't talking about bad luck, a missed save, or one bounce in overtime.
He was talking about discipline, and more than that, about the kind of careless mistakes that can drag a contender into trouble fast.
Tampa Bay came into this series with real expectations and the kind of roster that should be built for this moment.
Instead, the Canadiens walked out with a 1-0 series lead and all the momentum.
That's the part Cooper has to hate most.
His team did enough offensively to stay alive, but the self-inflicted damage kept opening the door.
Now the pressure is already on the Lightning to answer in Game 2 before this series shifts to Montreal, where the building gets loud and the energy turns fast.
For Tampa Bay, this is no longer just an overtime loss. It's an early warning that sloppy penalties and loose decisions can wreck a playoff run before it ever gets rolling.
