Alex Ovechkin and Spencer Carbery now sit at the center of Washington's offseason, and Chris Patrick isn't waiting around for one final answer.

The Capitals' GM made the team's position clear Monday. Washington will shape its summer plan whether Ovechkin returns or not, a sign the front office wants movement before the draft.
Patrick said Ovechkin is stepping back after the season to talk with his family and sort out what comes next. The club would prefer clarity before draft weekend, but it is leaving that timeline in the captain's hands.
That matters because this is not a team acting like it is waiting for a farewell lap. Washington still believes it can push forward and add pieces this summer.
Patrick's message was simple: “We'll be able to have a plan with or without him.” That line says plenty about how the Capitals see their next step.
“We're giving him some time here to get away from the season a little bit and think things through and talk to his family," Patrick said Monday. "We'll continue to support him in however his decision process plays out. We'll be able to have a plan with or without him.”

It also lines up with the bigger picture around the roster. Patrick stressed that Washington still sees itself as a team in contention, not one heading into a reset.

Washington is thinking bigger than one decision regarding Ovechkin

He also made it clear the organization wants to stay aggressive. Patrick said, “We're in a window where we're trying to win,” and that changes the tone of the entire offseason.
“Ideally, we would know going into the draft, but again, I think he’s earned the right to do the process how he wants to, and so we’ll just work with whatever we get from him, information-wise," Patrick said. “We're in a window where we're trying to win," Patrick said. "We have a good team here, and we're hoping to add pieces. We're in a good spot cap-wise going into this offseason to have flexibility to do different things," Patrick said.

That urgency shows up in how Washington views its trade position. Patrick pointed to the club's stockpile of picks and prospects as real leverage if the right deal appears.
He put it even more bluntly with two words: “wallet's full.” For a team chasing help up front, that sounds like a GM preparing to make calls, not just monitor the market.
There is also pressure on the blue line. Rasmus Sandin underwent knee surgery and could miss the start of next season, giving Patrick another issue to solve before camp opens.
“I think we're really in the best spot we've been in as far as having the stuff to trade that a team might want. We've got picks, we've got some good prospects. There's obviously some prospects that we're not going to move in these deals," Patrick said. "From that perspective, our wallet's full. If there's an opportunity there, we'd like to jump on it.”

So this summer is no longer only about Ovechkin's future. It is about whether Washington can turn cap space, futures, and urgency into a stronger lineup.
If Ovechkin comes back, the Capitals add around him. If he steps away, the need gets even sharper. Either way, Patrick has already shown the franchise is moving.
