Dick Axelsson, a draft pick of the Detroit Red Wings who has been playing in Sweden, has been suspended and fined for directing threats at a female official
Not sure this would be ok in any professional hockey league in the world, regardless of who the referee happens to be.
The official in question, Anna Hammar, wrote a report for the league's disciplinary committee in which she explained what happened and how it went down.
"I'm going over to pick him up for the penalty box. Dick Axelsson doesn't immediately want to go, but is eventually persuaded by his coach Robert Kimby to go over. As he jumps over the side, I turn my back to him and go a bit ahead, whereupon he says: 'Put your hands on me again and you know what happens'. I turn around and ask, 'What did you say?' and he repeats, 'You know what happens if you put your hands on me again.'"
Hammar had reportedly been involved in pulling apart Axelsson and opponent Henrik Nilsson earlier in the game.
For his actions, Axelsson has been suspended for three games and ordered to pay a fine of around $700 USD. The exchange between him and Hammar that led to a match penalty and subsequent suspension can be seen in the link below.
Axelsson was drafted 62nd overall by the Detroit Red Wings in 2006, but has spent the vast majority of his career playing in his home country of Sweden. He did come to North America in 2009, but returned home after playing 17 games with the AHL's Grand Rapids Griffins.
