Auston Matthews is still out, and Craig Berube heads into Anaheim with George Parros looming over a Leafs-Ducks rematch that already feels personal.

That's the story hanging over Monday night at Honda Center.
The league's senior disciplinarian is expected in the building, and that alone tells you this game has more heat than a normal stop on a road trip.
Toronto and Anaheim have been circling this rematch since March 12.
The last meeting left bad blood on both benches, and nobody around the Leafs has forgotten how that night changed the rest of the season.
Radko Gudas delivered the hit that left Matthews with a Grade 3 MCL tear and a quad contusion.
That ended the Leafs captain's 2025-26 season and turned one game into a long-running issue.
The frustration in Toronto didn't come only from the injury. It also came from the feeling that the Leafs didn't answer fast enough when their captain went down in front of their own bench.
The reaction came later.
Easton Cowan dropped the gloves with Jackson LaCombe in the third, and Max Domi added a misconduct after going after Beckett Sennecke.

The league knows this one could run hot

That's why Parros matters here. When the head of player safety shows up for a regular-season game, the message is obvious: keep the extra stuff in check, because every shove after the whistle will be watched.
NEW: With the Leafs and Ducks renewing hostilities in Anaheim tonight, hearing NHL Dept. Of Player Safety boss George Parros will attend tonight's game. Not unusual in instances like this when hostilities carry over from a previous meeting.
Domi helped keep this story alive after the first meeting. He made it clear Toronto had not moved on, and that only gave this rematch more edge before puck drop.
The league suspended Gudas for 5 games, but that never cooled the temperature around this matchup. If anything, it pushed even more attention toward what the Leafs might do in the second chapter.
Judd Moldaver, Matthews' agent, publicly blasted the discipline as too light. Parros later defended the ruling at the NHL GM meetings, which kept the debate alive instead of shutting it down.
There's another wrinkle too. Gudas was reportedly dealing with an ankle issue after a game against Calgary, and his status had been unclear even as reports suggested he wanted to play.
Whether Gudas dresses or not, the Leafs already know what kind of night this could become. Matthews is gone for the year, emotions are still close to the surface, and Parros being there says the NHL expects sparks.
For Berube's group, this isn't just about revenge. It's about staying out of the ditch, keeping control of the bench, and showing the league they can answer without letting the game own them.
