The Detroit Red Wings have finally addressed their biggest roster hole as head coach Todd McLellan welcomes veteran defenseman Justin Faulk to the Motor City.

The transaction was finalized just minutes before the 3 p.m. cutoff, ending weeks of speculation linking Steve Yzerman to the St. Louis Blues' blueliner.
It is a massive win for an organization that has desperately searched for a legitimate right-shot presence to stabilize their top four.
Faulk brings championship experience and a heavy shot that should immediately revitalize a stagnant power play. He tallied 11 goals and 32 points in 61 games for the Blues this season before the trade.
More importantly, he provides a reliable partner for Detroit's young core. His ability to eat over 22 minutes of ice time per night allows the coaching staff to slot their younger defenders into more appropriate roles.

Detroit gets their guy on defense

Detroit outlasted several Atlantic Division rivals, including Boston and Montreal, to secure the veteran's services. Yzerman clearly felt the time was right to move his assets for a player with term.
Faulk is under contract through next season with a $6.5 million cap hit. Unlike a standard rental, this move secures a top-four fixture for at least two playoff runs.
The veteran defender also brings a physical edge to the locker room. He recorded 101 blocks and 48 hits this season, proving he is willing to sacrifice his body in the defensive zone.
His transition game and controlled entries are a perfect match for the speed of Dylan Larkin and Lucas Raymond.
The Red Wings are officially signaling that the rebuild is over. By adding a three-time All-Star, they have transformed their blue line into a formidable unit for the stretch drive.
