Hurricanes and Penguins trade now officially completed
The Carolina Hurricanes saw their season come to an end on Thursday night after the New York Rangers scored three goals in the third period to take the series win in six games.
With Carolina's season now over, it means that their trade earlier this season with the Pittsburgh Penguins, which saw the Hurricanes acquire forward Jake Guentzel, is now officially completed.
According to CapFriendly, the 2024 second round pick sent to the Pittsburgh Penguins will not be upgraded to a first round pick because the Carolina Hurricanes didn't make it to the Stanley Cup Final. The other conditional pick, a 2024 fifth rounder, will stay with the Carolina Hurricanes after they failed to win the Stanley Cup.
"Draft Pick Condition Update:
The 2024 2nd round pick sent to Pittsburgh #LetsGoPens as part of the Jake Guentzel trade, will NOT upgrade to a 2024 1st round pick. Additionally, Carolina #CauseChaos will retain their 2025 5th round pick." CapFriendly said.
Jake Guentzel was arguably Carolina's best forward since being acquired by the team in early March. In 17 regular season games, he put up 25 points (eight goals, 17 assists) and followed that up with nine points in 11 Stanley Cup Playoff games.
The 29-year-old will have a big decision to make in the coming weeks on whether he'll want to return to the Carolina Hurricanes and sign a contract with them or if he'll hit the open market on July 1st.
