Corey Perry found late-career success under head coach Jim Hiller in Los Angeles.

The Kings were ready to keep the relationship going. The front office was actively preparing to sign him to a lucrative contract extension.
With 28 points through 50 games, the veteran was easily outperforming his cheap one-year deal. He anchored the bottom six, drove the transition game, and commanded the locker room.
But the 40-year-old winger abruptly changed course. He halted the extension talks as soon as a better opportunity emerged out East.
David Pagnotta reported that Perry personally broke things off with Los Angeles management. He specifically requested a trade back to the Tampa Bay Lightning.
The logic is entirely transparent. He is hunting for a Stanley Cup to cap off his career, and the Lightning roster gives him the absolute highest percentage chance.
Los Angeles respected his final wishes, securing a 2028 second-round pick in the transaction rather than losing him for nothing.

A Final Run at the Show

Over his NHL career, he has built a reputation as a relentless playoff performer. He is a hired gun for legitimate contenders.
The Kings are scratching and clawing for a wild card spot in the Western Conference. They simply lack the overall firepower for a deep postseason run right now.
Tampa Bay represents a proven championship environment. Head coach Jon Cooper knows exactly how to utilize his aggressive forecheck and net-front presence.
Sitting on 11 goals and 17 assists this season, he still possesses elite finishing ability around the crease. He creates absolute chaos during a power play.
Los Angeles agreed to retain 50 percent of his $2 million salary. That financial move made him a brilliant bargain for a Lightning organization constantly juggling the cap limit.
He adds instant sandpaper, crisp passing, and a high hockey IQ to the Tampa Bay lineup. Opposing defensemen despise dealing with his heavy style of play along the blue line.
At this stage in the game, legacy dictates every single move. He chose the most direct path to lifting the trophy one last time. It's impossible to be mad at this kind of decision. He has earned the right to make it.
The Lightning are gearing up for a brutal playoff schedule. Adding a battle-tested grinder guarantees their offensive output will frustrate the rest of the league.
