The Buffalo Sabres organization added veteran grit in a deal with the New York Rangers involving Sam Carrick.

After missing out on Colton Parayko, who refused to waive his no-trade clause to join the Sabres, Buffalo confirmed they weren't going to give up.
The organization is officially buying at the deadline and completed yet another trade.
General Manager Jarmo Kekäläinen sent a third-round pick and a sixth-round selection in the 2026 draft to the Rangers to land veteran centerman Sam Carrick.
It is a savvy piece of business for a team currently sitting in a dead heat with the Tampa Bay Lightning for the top spot in the Atlantic Division.
With a 37-19-6 record and 80 points through 62 games, the Sabres are finally acting like a contender. They aren't just satisfied with making the playoffs; they want to do damage.

Sabres and Rangers complete trade

Carrick arrives with 60 games under his belt this season, posting four goals and 10 points while playing a hard-nosed style. He provides exactly what the Sabres need for a deep run.
The financial side makes this a solid execution for the front office. Carrick is under contract through the 2026-27 season with a very manageable $1 million annual cap hit.
He brings the kind of sandpaper that has been missing from the Buffalo lineup for years. The 34-year-old forward has already racked up 53 penalty minutes this year and doesn't shy away from the dirty areas.
He is a 10-season NHL veteran who has seen it all. From his early days with the Toronto Maple Leafs to a deep run with the Edmonton Oilers, he understands the grind of the Show.
Carrick appeared in 10 games during the Oilers' march to the 2024 Stanley Cup Final. That level of high-pressure experience is massive for a young locker room trying to find its way.
Last season with the Rangers, he hit a career-high 20 points while dressing for 80 games. He proved he could handle a heavy workload without sacrificing his defensive responsibilities.
Over his career, he has suited up for 380 NHL games, totaling 38 goals and 427 penalty minutes. He is a nightmare to play against in the corners and on the penalty kill.
The Sabres haven't been in the playoffs since 2011, but this trade suggests the front office is convinced this group is ready to break the curse. Moving draft picks for a veteran is a definitive "win-now" move.
It tells the players that management believes in the current trajectory. Carrick isn't going to lead the team in scoring, but he will ensure the stars have more room to breathe.
Buffalo is playing for keeps this spring. Expect Carrick to be a fixture in the lineup as the team pushes for home-ice advantage in the opening round.
