That represents solid execution for a 32-year-old taking demanding defensive zone starts. He thrives on both the power play and the penalty kill.
Despite a -3 rating over his last stretch, his underlying metrics remain strong. Montreal has a glaring hole at the 2C position right now.
Suzuki carries too much of the heavy lifting every single night. Opposing teams simply stack their top defensive pairings against him, and it isn't sustainable.
Acquiring the American center completely takes the tough matchup load off the top line. It immediately opens up the transition game for the entire roster.

The Rangers are actively retooling their locker room. Chris Drury already shipped Artemi Panarin out west, signaling a massive philosophical shift in New York.
Montreal holds the exact future assets Drury craves. Kent Hughes can easily dangle premium draft capital and a cost-controlled prospect like Owen Beck.
With 12 goals already on his resume this year, Trocheck is far from washed up. Even when held scoreless, he logs heavy minutes and drives offensive output.
His $5.625M cap hit runs through the 2028-29 campaign. That gives the Canadiens absolute cost certainty while their promising youth movement matures.
Over his NHL career, the veteran has dominated the faceoff dot with a 54.2% success rate. That solves a massive, lingering deficiency for the Habs.
Trocheck holds a 12-team no-trade list. But Montreal is a rising young contender, offering him a legitimate window to chase a Stanley Cup.
He hasn't played in a Canadian hockey market yet. The chance to perform under the bright lights of the Bell Centre is incredibly enticing.
